 B&W Revamps Nautilus Range
December 22, 2004
Bowers & Wilkins has
announced a new flagship 800 series of loudspeakers, which are due to be available from
dealers on January 15, 2005. The new 800-series speakers' most radical innovation is the
diamond-dome tweeter used by the top models, identified by a "D" suffix in their
model names. The remaining models in the 800 series (denoted by an "S" suffix)
use the alloy-dome tweeter developed for the B&W's Signature series, and are said to
be considerable improvements on the original Nautilus 800 speakers. All of the new
three-way 800-series speakers use an improved version of B&Ws FST midrange
driver that is said to incorporate enhancements developed for the Signature 800 speaker.
The new 800-series speakers also use new bass drivers with cones made of a
sandwich-construction of carbon-fiber skins and a core of Rohacell, a rigid foam widely
used in the aerospace industry for its light weight and high strength. Improved crossovers
finish off the new Nautilus speakers.
List prices for the new Nautilus speakers range from
$20,000 USD per pair for the 800D (shown) to $2500 per pair for the 805S. In between, the
801D costs $16,000 per pair, the 802D $12,000, the 803D $8000, the 803S $5500, and the
804S $4000. There is also a range of new matching home-theater speakers. For more
information on B&W's entire speaker lineup, visit the company's website.
